Drayton Manor Theme Park is riding high after a record breaking 65th Anniversary season!

ThomasCrankyDrayton Manor Theme Park is celebrating the end of a record breaking 65th anniversary season, with its biggest ever attendance numbers recorded for 2015. As an Ambassador for the park my family was there for all the big events and we had a fabulous time!

The award winning attraction based in Tamworth, Staffordshire has seen more guests visit during 2015 than any other year, with a 10 per cent increase on the previous season in 2014.

The action packed anniversary year kicked off with a £2.5 million expansion of Europe’s only Thomas Land™ back in April 2015. The park welcomed a host of new rides and attractions including Captain’s Sea Adventure, Flynn’s Fire Rescue and Toby’s Tram Express, which increased the overall rider capacity in Thomas Land to 5,130 people per hour. The exciting new Thomas Land also saw the arrival of the brand new two-storey Sodor Airport, in a traditional terminal style it has a top level balcony for VIP ‘travellers’ with not-to-be-missed views of Thomas Land and a ground level café for guests to relax during their visit.jeremyjetsflying

Following a successful summer, the much loved family attraction hit a record attendance for its Fireworks Spectacular weekend, welcoming nearly 33,000 visitors over three days at the end of October. It was a whopping 28% increase in the number of visitors compared to the previous largest fireworks attendance and also the largest firework display the park has seen in 25 years. Set to the critically acclaimed soundtrack from The War of the Worlds, visitors were dazzled by a fantastic, colourful array of explosive rockets and lights.

To top it all off, the 65th anniversary season ended with another record breaking attendance during its Magical Christmas event with a 34% increase in guests from 2014.  On Sunday 20th December, the park welcomed 45% more people than on its previous biggest day in 2014, smashing its biggest selling Magical Christmas day six times over!

Despite the park’s momentous success in 2015, it is looking forward to the coming year and there is plenty to keep existing and new visitors excited. In spring 2016, the Staffordshire based theme park will see the opening of its brand new Tamarin Trail. Guests will have the opportunity to walk through the beautiful planted gardens in the attraction, getting up close and personal with the cute and inquisitive monkeys. It will have eight new enclosures that will be housing a variety of tamarins and marmosets. There are five species so far, including the white lipped tamarin, red handed tamarin, emperor tamarin, cotton top tamarin and the common marmoset.Sumatran tigers 3

2016 will also mark the five year anniversary of the opening of the hugely popular onsite four-star Drayton Manor Hotel, which has featured Thomas & Friends™ themed rooms since its opening in 2011. The park’s onsite restaurant the Grill Inn will also celebrate its fifth anniversary this year.

CEO of Drayton Manor Theme Park, Colin Bryan, said: “Our 65th anniversary year has been a truly momentous year for the Bryan family and all of the staff here and we’re so pleased to have been able to provide so many families with lasting memories.

“We always want to go above and beyond to make sure every season is better than the last for our visitors and this year we did just that, we’re really looking forward to another fantastic year in 2016.”

Bacon & Chestnut Savoury Cheesecake Recipe with Laughing Cow Extra Light

Savoury Cheesecake

Just before Christmas I was contacted by the lovely folks over at Laughing Cow to tell me about their new product ‘Laughing Cow Extra Light’. They challenged me to create a recipe using Extra Light with any leftovers I had. One wonderful and slightly more unusual way to use leftover food is to make a cheesecake, that’s right a cheesecake! I looked in my cupboards and dug out leftover Chestnut Puree (I’m a bit obsessed with Chestnuts at Christmas) cooked bacon in the fridge and a myriad of random crackers. So today I’m sharing my Bacon and Chestnut Savoury Cheesecake Recipe!

Ingredients

200g Crushed Crackers

500g Laughing Cow Extra Light

125g Melted Butter

3 Large Eggs

100g Cooked Bacon

1 Tsp Chopped Garlic

2 Tbsp Chestnut Puree

4 Tbsp Sage & Onion Stuffing Mix + extra for sprinkling

Shake of Parsley

Small Plum tomatoes

Basil

Salt & Pepper

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 170C/ Gas Mark 3. Grease and line a spring form tin.

Time to work out all your stresses with some dedicated cracker destruction. I used a mixture of crackers that were left in the box, cheese, herb, salted and so on. Pop in a bowl and whack them with the end of a rolling pin until crushed. Mix in the melted butter and then press into the base of the tin. Pop into the fridge to set.

Step 2

In a large bowl whisk together the Laughing Cow, Eggs and Chestnut Puree. If your using leftover bacon then add it now, if your bacon is not already cooked, then fry up with the chopped garlic, cool then add to the mixture. Add the Sage and Onion Stuffing mix, Parsley and Basil and season with salt and pepper. Grab the tin from the fridge, give one final whisk then pour the mixture over the base.

Step 3

Sprinkle the extra stuffing mix over the top of the cheesecake, then slice the tomatoes and lay over the top for decoration. Bake in the oven for approximately 40 minutes. Allow to cool before removing from the tin (sliding a sharp knife around the edge of the tin before removing will help). Chill for several hours before serving. Serve with salad and extra tomatoes.

Tip. This cheesecake is hugely adaptable so just have a play with it. Change the meat to chicken, add extra cheese, whatever you have leftover or fancy using!

And for Dessert!

I discovered that Laughing Cow Extra Light makes superb (and somewhat less guilty) Cream Cheese Frosting! I spread it liberally on top of a carrot cake, which is the perfect way to use up all those carrots hiding in the veg drawer.IMG_5688

Cream cheese frosting is basically just butter cream with soft cheese added, start by mixing together the butter and icing sugar then add in the cream cheese, don’t over mix though or it will go runny!

I forgot to mention earlier that I was very surprised by Laughing Cow Extra Light, I don’t think you’d ever guess it was lower in fat (in fact my Mum didn’t!) the taste and texture and both fantastic. I’m far more accustomed to ‘light’ cream cheeses being a bit weak and almost watery. So thumbs up even if you’re just eating it on toast (like me right now!). It has just 19 calories per triangle and only 2% fat which is wonderful.

Unique Craft Idea for New Year – Promise Pot Tutorial

pots1a The New Year is seen as a time of fresh starts and new beginnings. As we say farewell to the old year we pledge to leave behind traits that we no longer find desirable. Unfortunately many people, myself included find that keeping resolutions is harder than we might have thought. Rather than viewing forgotten resolutions as a mark of failure, my family decided to make the whole experience more positive from the outset with this unique craft idea for New Year. It was with this in mind that the ‘Promise Pot’ was born. Instead of resolving not to do certain things, the idea is that you pledge to do something positive for yourself or your family. This could be anything you like, perhaps you dream of visiting a new country and this year you promise to make that wish come true. Or maybe your needs are smaller and this year you pledge to read more books. The only condition is that your promise must be positive. So if you have a very particular goal such as weight loss, rather than vowing to loose a set number of pounds, perhaps you could resolve to treat yourself more healthily over the coming months instead.

This tutorial was originally created and written by myself for the Boden community in 2011 (hence the date on the flags 🙂 ).

Promise Pots can be large or small. A large one can cover a whole family and be kept the year round as a reminder. Smaller pots are perfect as place settings which guests can take home.

1flowerpotI made the smaller pots using tiny flowerpots bought from a local garden centre, I believe they are intended for small cacti.Oasis

Once you’ve chosen the pots you’ll need to fill them with florists oasis. I find the easiest way to do this is to take a big chunk and slowly shave it down using a kitchen knife.Organza

Once the oasis fits snugly into the pot it needs to be covered with fabric. I like to use gold organza, it’s thin, sparkly and perfect for the job. Gather the fabric around the Oasis and tie at the bottom, trim off any excess fabric. Turn the Oasis over and push into the pot.

Next it’s time to decorate! I used red lace, but ribbon, sequins and glitter all look fabulous stuck around the edge of your pot.6stick-in-pot

Take a Kebab stick and cut in half. Cut a small piece of card 1½cm wide by 9cm long. Fold the card in half and write the year on both sides. Glue the folded card around the top of the cut kebab stick, then push into the centre of your pot.

Next cut a square of Organza fabric, approximately 28cm square. Place the pot into the middle of the fabric and pull up the corners towards the centre stick. Tie the fabric in place around the stick using a piece of ribbon.

Take some more kebab sticks and cut in half, make more cardboard flags to attach to the top. Put 4 flags into each pot. Your guests can now write their promises onto the flags and keep the pots to inspire them.

shot-glassShot Glass Promise Pot

Using a shot glass is a quick and simple variation for individual pots. The only difference is the Oasis is not covered with fabric, it is pushed into the glass and then a small circle of kitchen foil used to cover the top. Then glue some ribbon around the glass to hide the Oasis. The flags in this picture already have some promises written on.

large-potLarge Promise Pot

To make the large version for your family or to give as a gift, use a larger Terracotta flowerpot. In my example here the Oasis is only covered at the top using a couple of pieces of Hessian fabric. Any fabric will do but it must have a loose weave to allow the sticks to be pushed in. I then used some cocktail sticks to secure the fabric at the edge of the pot. You will need to cut off one pointed end to do this, thus creating giant pins. Glue some ribbon around the edge of the pot and then fill the fabric with sweets to add a bit of colour. The flags are made in the same way as before but will need to be longer in length.

I hope you all have a fabulous New Year with many wonderful times ahead of you!
