Sometimes being a child can be a frustrating and challenging time. You’re full of ideas but curtailed by resources and means, full of energy and enthusiasm but forced to fit into a world of rules. Just once in a while wouldn’t it be great if you could take full control? That’s what we offered our three children with their very own movie night using Sky Store and their Sky Buy & Keep service. They could choose the films, the food, the time of day, even the clothing, everything was within their control and this is what we got up too.

Sky Store

Sky Store

First they took a tour of the Sky Store website to research which movies were available to rent/buy. They decided on two new films ‘Walking With Dinosaurs’ and ‘Frozen’. Next up the food!

BBQ Chicken Pizza

Homemade BBQ Chicken Pizza

My eldest son wanted to make his own pizza with BBQ chicken on top. First he made a yummy BBQ sauce with his Dad and then he loaded up his plain pizza base with tomatoes, cheese and chicken.

Nachos

Nachos

We can’t have a movie night without Nachos! Layers of Tortilla crisps smothered in melted cheese, Guacamole, Salsa and Jalapenos on the side. My daughter wanted to make these and she did a fabulous job!

Chocolate Popcorn

The kids didn’t just want popcorn they wanted chocolate popcorn! First the corn is popped in the microwave or on the stove. Next smother the freshly popped corn with melted white and milk chocolate, spread out onto a tray and leave to set. I warn you though it’s very moreish!

Sweet Pizza Making

Sweet Pizza!

When I was little I was a huge fan of sweet pizzas and loved making them with my parents. My kids have never been in control of the toppings before and this time they wanted three pizzas all smothered in chocolate, cookies, jelly babies and more! These are so sinful that they’re heavenly.

The Setting

The setting had to be just right and the kids insisted that everyone wore their pyjamas and snuggled up together on the sofa. The lights were turned off and the curtains closed, to give that cinema feel.

The Films

Walking with Dinosaurs was a clever mixture of story and documentary and the children were transfixed. From a parents point of view it’s always nice to think they’ve digested a film and actually learned something in the process.

Frozen was my personal favourite of the two movies. Highly amusing snow bound high jinx and catchy songs, pure Disney delight.

Sky Store

I’d never used Sky Store before and found it extremely easy to navigate on the TV. I set up a pin to prevent accidental purchases and then within about two clicks our films were ready to view. There’s a huge variety of movies starting from just 99p for a 48hr rental, even the more expensive offerings certainly make for an economical night in for the whole family. A trip to the cinema would cost us over £30 so there’s an instant appeal right there.

Plus with the Sky Buy and Keep service you can download your movie permanently to your Sky Box and the DVD is sent out to you seperately, which is brilliant if you want to watch it later in a house that doesn’t have Sky.

Finally…

The kids had a fabulous night and have already asked when we can do it again. They loved taking control of the choices and it forced them to discuss and compromise with each others wishes which can never be a bad lesson to learn. All in all it was a wonderful night of family fun and the kind of stress free occasion that can seem rare when you’re part of a busy modern family.

Disney Princess Ultimate Dream Castle Review with Toys R Us

castleWith two brothers bouncing about the house my daughter doesn’t always have the opportunity for purely girl based play. In fact when I told her that Toys R Us were sending over this dolls-house and we were going to write a Disney Ultimate Dream Castle review she didn’t seem all that excited at first. Thankfully the castle has inspired a huge amount of play and a rather surprising reaction from all my kids.

IMG_7973The excitement started as soon as my kids saw the completed castle, standing at over 3ft tall it’s huge! That alone makes this one impressive toy as far as most kids are concerned and all my children were thoroughly impressed.

The castle has three storeys, six themed rooms and a Rapunzel hair ‘elevator’. Your dolls enter via the front door arriving in Snow White’s Kitchen complete with oven, trolley and various cooking accessories. A short walk over and you enter Belle’s Dining room with large dining table and chairs. Lumiere and two napkins sit in the centre and can be rotated with special dials on the side of the table.

IMG_0491On the second floor your princess can relax in Ariel’s bathroom complete with bathtub and toilet. In the centre of this floor Sleeping Beauty can ask the giant mirror who is the fairest of them all as she primps and styles herself to perfection at her vanity station. Moving across leads to Cinderella’s sewing room where Suzy the Mouse sits upon an elegant chair.

IMG_0490On the top floor there’s a grand bed fit for any of the princess dolls (Merida from Brave lives there in my daughter’s castle) and a tower balcony for Rapunzel to let down her hair or ride it instead with her hair elevator. The elevator can accommodate any of the princess dolls and is great fun to watch them spin down to the ground floor.

Surprisingly enough (or not if you don’t bow to gender stereotypes) all my children, including the boys enjoy playing with this castle. The elevator seems to provide a lot of amusement and with prince dolls readily available there’s plenty of scope for the boys to get involved as well. After all they all enjoy the films that these characters are based on, so playing with them seems natural to them. My daughter is no longer forced to play with typical ‘boy’ toys if she wants to play with her brothers, they can now play along with her castle as well.

IMG_7974Durability

The castle is only made of plastic and I did wonder if it would survive enthusiastic play from three young children, thankfully it still looks as good as the day it arrived.

Value for money

With an RRP of £199.99 (£149.99 at Toys R Us currently) clearly this toy is a considered purchase, however included in the pack you receive 35 play pieces including elegant furniture and accessories (ovens, table, chairs, cutlery etc.) It also includes Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast, Pascal from Tangled and Suzy Mouse from Cinderella.

No dolls are included which seems a shame however anyone considering this castle will probably own a princess or two before purchase anyway.

Would I recommend this product?

If you have the space to house this castle and any children who are ardent fans of Disney films then your kids are bound to thank you for the acquisition of this toy house. It obviously commands quite a high price but relevant to other similar options (Barbie etc) it doesn’t stand out as being overly inflated.

Could it be improved in anyway?

My only complaint with the entire castle is that one of our turrets would just not fit on, we think it may have been squashed or warped in the box. Thankfully my daughter hasn’t noticed its loss but if I’d bought this castle then it would annoy me.

I think a special edition doll only available with the castle would have been a lovely touch as well.

Smile Brilliant LED Teeth Whitening Kit Review and Giveaway!

led-teeth-whiteningBright white teeth are often seen as a sign of health and beauty but for some people it’s a dream that stays illusive. Years of coffee, wine or tea drinking take their toll on our teeth and before long our pearly whites are covered with yellow stains. Smile Brilliant believe that they have the answer with their LED Teeth Whitening Kit and today I’m not only reviewing one, I’m giving one away to one lucky reader!

Clean white teeth are a particular bugbear of mine and I try to take good care of my own so while I did try out the LED kit I didn’t find it made a massive difference, however I think this is largely due to years of prodigious care on my part. However my husband on the other hand is a whole different story. In his youth he was guilty of some tooth related neglect and along with a habit of smoking cigarettes his teeth became quite stained. While he quit smoking years ago the stains remained, we tried whitening tooth pastes…. nothing! We tried tooth whitening kits…. teeny tiny improvement that quickly faded. We were out of options!

I handed him the Smile Brilliant LED kit and within one use his teeth were looking significantly better, still somewhat yellow but definitely the cleanest I remember them. Within two uses we were starting to get really impressed, finally something was making a difference!

Is the Kit easy to use?

Very easy. All you do is paint some whitening solution (provided in pen form) onto your teeth, pop in a tooth guard and hold the special LED light against the guard. Then sit back and wait 20-45 minutes per session. I have to admit the only arduous part of using the kit is the waiting, speaking is definitely a no no.

Would I recommend the kit?

Yes I think it’s definitely worth a try, however it’s important to note that no tooth whitening system can whiten beyond an individuals own natural shade of enamel, so don’t expect a smile that will reflect off the sun.
