Make your own Totoro Hoodie Jumper

Today I’m going to show you how to make your own Totoro hoodie jumper! In previous posts I’ve mentioned my families enduring love of Studio Ghibli films, but it’s not always easy to source merchandise if you’re looking for a gift for a fan. I’d seen Totoro themed hoodies online but no tutorials, so I set about making my own.

First you need a plain grey jumper.

Then unpick the front pocket and put it aside (you’ll need it later).

Now the fun begins! I bought some cream coloured fleece fabric and drew a basic template to give the Totoro a big round tummy! Cut out the shape from fleece and carefully pin to the front of your hoodie. I turned the edge of the fleece under as I pinned. Next I stitched closed to the edge of the fleece fabric all the way around to secure.

Totoro needs some fabulous ears coming out of the top of the hood. First draw a template on paper and then grab the front pocket you removed earlier and cut out four ear shapes. Place the right sides of the fabric together and sew around the edge of the ears, remembering to leave a gap so you can turn them out the right way. Press with an iron.

To attach the ears first begin by laying the hood of your jumper down flat and work out where you want the ears to be placed. Mark on the hood using a pencil or tailor’s chalk. Very carefully cut along the mark you just made, push the ears inside the cut and pin into position. I sewed the ears into place by hand rather than using a machine so I could ease the fabric correctly and not create and a deep ridged sewing line.

I grabbed some more fleece and sketched out Totoro’s eyes and nose. These were then pinned and sewn to the front of the hood.

Totoro has a few small shapes on his tummy which I made from the remaining pocket fabric, I tacked them into position and then sewed securely with my sewing machine.

The finished hoodie was a very well received Christmas present!

Warm Your Home this Winter

I love Christmas and I adore the visual beauty of winter but I do not enjoy being cold! In fact I’ve been finding it increasingly difficult to move about the house, my body seems to freeze up and I just can’t convince myself to move! Just as I was resigning my days to hiding under the duvet, Homeserve challenged me to warm up a room in my home with the help of a £50 B&Q voucher. Challenge most profoundly accepted I decided to warm up our lounge as it’s where we spend most of our time.

The problem

Our lounge is a lovely room, however thanks to a certain furry companion it has no carpets (he’d have ruined them with muddy paws long ago). It also has ridiculously tall ceilings thanks to those Edwardian chaps who constructed the place. High ceilings and no carpeting do not make for a warm cosy room!

The solution

Warming up a seemingly cold room normally involves the addition of soft furnishings and carpets, obviously on £50 I couldn’t go too wild so here’s how we did it on a budget!

IMG_6521The sofa & chair

My sofa is lovely and comfy but a tad bare since my old cushions went through the drier and came out looking ‘interesting’.IMG_6543

To add warmth the sofa was treated to two new cushions (stuffed with the old pads from the previous pair) and a lovely snuggly throw. The throw not only looks warm but can be pulled up and draped around you a cold winter night.IMG_6562

The chair got its own matching throw and cushion.

The floor

Obviously I wasn’t going to be able to carpet the floor on my budget and our current one is far more practical with children and a dog. Instead I decided to add a big rug to make the floor warmer underfoot and cosier to look at.IMG_6522

You may be wondering how I managed to afford a lovely big rug. The answer is carpet tiles!

Carpet tiles provide an incredibly economic solution if you need a new rug. The design and colour is completely up to you and it’s just as easy to create colourful checkerboard designs as well as plain. A carpet tile rug is also incredibly practical. Buy one or two extras and you never need to worry about that muddy boot print or spilt glass of wine again, just replace that particular tile!

To make a carpet tile rug just measure the size you want to cover (carpet tiles can even be used to make L shape rugs). Then purchase your tiles along with some carpet tape, align them making sure to butt the edges closely together and fix using carpet tape on the reverse.IMG_6541

Seating

Adding extra soft furnishings and seating is both practical and warming. I picked up one of these squidgy cushion seats (see pic above) in the clearance section of B&Q. Easy to move about and comfortable to sit on, we love it!

We also added a couple of large cushions to serve as floor seating, these are really quick and simple to sew yourself as they are just large square shapes.IMG_6548

Lighting

If your room has a cold or dark corner consider popping a simple lamp in there to add ambience and warmth, candles work well too but don’t forget to keep an eye on them while burning.

I find one of these fellows really warm a room up, they like to cuddle and sit on cold feet!

Hotel Chocolat Festive Wreath Review

Hotel Chocolat Festive WreathI’d be happy to review chocolate all year long, but at Christmas it’s very much a part of the proceedings and I was thrilled when I was sent the Hotel Chocolat Festive Wreath to review.

Hotel Chocolat have earned a reputation for quality chocolates designed to make the recipient feel special and valued (even if they purchased it for themselves!) The only problem with having such a glowing resume is of course living up to the higher expectations it undoubtedly brings.

Style

Obviously the first thing you notice about the Festive Wreath is its appearance, stunningly moulded from chocolate which would grace the centre of any Christmas table.

As a centrepiece it’s also a novel idea and a great way to impress your guests. The wreath was slightly smaller than I had imagined but when I lifted it up and felt the weight I understood why, there is a lot of chocolate in there!

Hotel Chocolat Festive WreathTaste

Cutting the wreath is harder than you might think as a direct result of it being made from solid chocolate with nibbly biscuits and crushed almond florentines, make sure you have a plate underneath to catch the crumbs.

It’s made from a higher quality chocolate than you might ordinarily buy and the taste reflects this in its rich deep flavour. Saying that all my children really enjoyed tucking into this wreath and they have been introduced to different qualities of cocoa. Some kids may find this too rich, but it will definitely suit an adult palate.

Price

At £21 I personally think this wreath is really good value for money, for the sheer number of grams included it’s a great deal for a quality brand such as Hotel Chocolat. Obviously these cost more than certain high street Chocolatiers but as the courier who delivered this to my door said ‘ooh posh chocolates, lucky you!’ this brand is a cut above the average.

Would I recommend this product?

Without a doubt, it’s beautifully presented, tastes devine and would make a fabulous gift!

The wreath is available in Hotel Chocolat stores nationwide or you can order online and view the rest of their range on their website.
