Boursin Sun Ripened Tomato, Onion and Chive Review

In 1957 in the Normandy town of Gournay, French cheesemaker François Boursin® created the famous soft cheese that still bears his name to this very day. It was also the first cheese featured in a TV advert back in 1968 when it was declared “Du pain, du vin, du Boursin®” (Some bread, some wine and some Boursin®). Over fifty years later Boursin has added a brand new flavour to the collection called Sun Ripened Tomato, Onion and Chive!

Having recently received a sample of this new flavour, I am happy to share my thoughts with you all today. I already love the original garlic and herb cheese but would this new flavour pass the taste test?

It’s texture is identical to original Boursin so if you love the soft crumbly consistency perfect for adorning a slice of crunchy fresh bread you’ll not be disappointed here.

The flavour is devine, the familiar creamy backtaste, but layered with a rich tomato flavour set off perfectly by the onion and chives. If you have travelled to the Mediterranean then this cheese can take you back there in one bite. Spread it thickly across fresh baked bread and drift off to warmer climes in an instant.

Would I recommend this product?

I think this makes a fabulous addition to the cheeseboard and it will certainly be a familiar sight around this family kitchen.

Could it be improved in anyway?

I’d love to see this flavour available in minis in the future for crumbling into salads and soups. In terms of flavour I think it is perfect.

So You Want To Be A Pirate DVD review

Earlier in the year Aardman Animations released The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists at the cinema. In honour of it’s DVD release Aardman have produced a short animation DVD in conjunction with Tesco stores called ‘So You Want To Be A Pirate!’ I was lucky enough to be sent a review copy to watch with the kids.

First of all I haven’t actually seen the film that this DVD is promoting! Like most films I fully intended to take the children along to the cinema, but family life being what it is we never got around to it. This is where DVDs come in so handy, I can always find a moment at home to sit down with the kids. The children were therefore very excited to watch this short animation, they knew it was not the film, but as my boys are currently somewhat pirate potty they were very excited none the less.

Like many people I grew up with the Wallace & Gromit films made by Aardman. The whole family would sit down together and even the adults could appreciate not only the skillful stop motion animation but also the wonderfully British humour. I even had a budgie named after Gromit, we were true fans! This undoubtedly means that I have high expectations when it comes to their new releases.

I am therefore very pleased to report that this DVD lived up to those expectations in everyway. As usual there was the smooth animation and wonderfully wide grins that are essential to an Aardman flick. There was also a good deal of humour that had me chuckling away as much (if not more!) than the kids. Everything I expect from an Aardman film, from the jokes, to the styling, to the cute animals, every element was here.

The DVD also features extras including: How To Animate Your Pirate, How To Draw A Pirate and How To Talk Like A Pirate!.

Plus there’s extra content accessible by popping the DVD into your computer including games, colouring pages, recipes and more!

The DVD itself only runs for 17minutes, but I find that perfect for short attention spans and at an RRP of just £5 you can’t really complain.

All in all we thoroughly enjoyed this DVD and have watched it many times already.

Could it be improved in anyway?

Not really, there were certainly no complaints from the kids.

Would I recommend this item?

Without a doubt, in fact I already have to several friends. It’s just jolly good family fun, Yar! (we’ve all started speaking the Pirate lingo now!) 🙂

Merrydown Medium Cider Review

Having recently celebrated the Queen’s diamond jubilee and with the Olympics starting in July, there’s plenty of reasons to crack open a bottle of something bubbly at garden parties, picnics and BBQs. My husband is a fan of traditional ale, but I personally prefer a yummy cider or perry. That’s not to say that I’m not picky, there are far more bottles I reject than accept. Having had the opportunity to testdrive Merrydown Medium Cider I’m very pleased to report on my personal findings!

The Merrydown story began in 1946 when three friends turned their garage bound hobby into a business. The first batch of Merrydown was called apple wine and was pressed in a 300 year old oak cider press borrowed from a farmer. The current recipe is free from artificial sweeteners, colours and flavours.

From a visual perspective the cider is a light yellow tone, with sporadic bubbles floating to the surface. It’s not heavy on the fizz which I infinitely prefer, so many other makes seem to relie on fizziness to disguise less than perfect flavour.

Taste wise Merrydown is very refreshing, summery and fruity, so much so than I’ve been forced into that most woeful of situations, creating a fake word to sum the flavour up ‘Applely!’

Having received several bottles I’ve been handing it out to friends and family alike and have yet to find anyone who doesn’t rate it highly. It has a lighter quality than many ciders but with such a satisfying taste that it hardly fails to impress. It would cook beautifully, but while I kept vowing to use it in this way I have to admit that it didn’t hang around long enough. A full selection of complementary recipes is available on the Merrydown website.

The Apple flavour itself is somehow exceedingly British, there’s nothing sharp or pert about it. Just like Brtish Apples themselves it has a roundness that just rolls off the tongue. It would make a fabulous addition to a traditional summer picnic or garden party. At 7.5% it’s average in terms of alcohol content.

Would I recommend this product?

I would and I have been, it really has such a lovely flavour I don’t see how it can fail to win fans.

Could it be improved in anyway?

Not really, it’s perfect as it is. Maybe if it came with free bunting 😛
